The overall aesthetic of the design was inspired by the minimal, modern colour palette of SpaceX spacecrafts, as well as, the elegant designs of their engines. In addition, the shapes and forms of Virgin Galactic’s first successful spaceship can also be seen in the circular, magnetic compartments designed to hold and store canned foods. Features like magnets, velcro and elastic straps are purposely designed to mirror the equipments used by modern astronauts without affecting the kit’s overall aesthetic. The kit’s exterior also mirrors the visual pattern of cosmic rays when travelling through space with symmetrical, intricate details etched to both the top & bottom cases, which are secured with aluminium hinges.
Thermoforming was chosen as the main manufacturing method for its flexibility, cost effectiveness and sustainable qualities in mass production. Being a popular choice for suitcase productions, thermoforming also enables the use of Polycarbonate (PP) plastic which is ideal for the context of this design. Used on NASA’S first helmets, PP is exceptionally light in weight and can withstand the rigors of transport due to its high impact resistance. These qualities coupled with a decorative (brushed aluminium) abrasion resistant film can further enhance its durability in outer space. Other materials in CaseX have been carefully selected to reflect the finishes, textures and colours of the 14 different types of materials used for spacesuits.
